A Brief Introduction to Agricultural College

Agricultural College of GDOU was one of most early established second colleges after the establishment of Zhanjiang Ocean University in January, 1997. College has more than 40-year history. The development of its former Zhanjiang Agricultural Academy can be traced back to the institution of Zhanjiang Branch, South China Agriculture College in 1958, merged by Zhanjiang Agricultural Academy in the end of 1958. After the closing of Zhanjiang Branch in 1963, where Huguang Labor University, Zhanjiang area of Agricultural School, and Five.Seven Agricultural University , Zhanjiang Agricultural College used to build. Zhanjiang Agricultural Academy was set up with approval of the State Council in 1980. In June, 2005, Zhanjiang Agricultural Academy was renamed Agricultural College of Guangdong Ocean University.

Since from the establishment, under the direction of Party education principle, with following and development of several generations, the college has made a great advance, especially has cultivated many talented persons of agriculture science and management for west area of Guangdong. Specially in the short time of ten years after the incorporations, the college has improved teaching quality and science research level, enlarged enrollment number and promote its reputation; completed two forward leaps from academy education to undergraduate education, undergraduate education to postgraduate education, by largely fetching in high quality talented persons and speeding up the foundation building of teaching , research and technology exploring ,became the important base for cultivating our country agriculture technology talented persons and science research.

The college has five faculties including Biotechnology, Resources & Environmental Sciences, Gardens, Animal Science Technology, and Veterinary Medicine, four undergraduate programs covering Crop Genetics and Breeding, Animal Genetics and Breeding, Animal Nutrition and Feed Science, Plant Pathology. The college has one provincial key disciplines of Guangdong which Is Crop Genetics and Breeding; and four key disciplines at GDOU which are Crop Genetics and Breeding ,Animal Genetics and Breeding, Plant Pathology and Ecology. The college has ten subjects which are Biotechnology, Plant Protection, Gardens, Horticulture, Agriculture Resources and Environment, Forest Resources Protection and Junketing, Animal Sciences, Veterinary Medicine, Environmental Sciences, Land Resource Management ,etc.

The college has more perfect and systematic teaching and research experiment bases. There are six practice bases in campus and more and thirty practice bases outside. The six bases in campus are Agronomy Bases, Biotechnology Base, and Animal Science Technology Base, Garden Base, Animal Hospital Base, Ecology Observation station which are to be established. The college has experiment teaching centre including 6 big Laboratories (totally 28 branch laboratories) which are Agriculture Biology Basic Laboratory, Crop Laboratory, Garden & Horticulture Laboratory, Agriculture Resource and Environment Laboratory, Animal Science Laboratory, and Veterinary Medicine Laboratory; and research institution such as Agriculture Biotechnology Institution (affiliated mixed and excellent Rice Laboratory, Sugarcane Laboratory, Animal Nutrition Laboratory, Plant Protection Technology Laboratory, Biotechnology Application Laboratory, Molecule Genetics and Breeding Laboratory) , and Horticulture Institution, Agriculture Ecology Garden ( being built ) etc.

The college attaches importance to faculty building , a strong and highly qualified faculty team .Now there are 132 staff, of which 106 are full-time teachers, among which 15 are professors, 4 are researchers, 43 are associate professors, 3 are associate researchers, 2 are agronomists, 4 are advanced lab masters, 1 are advanced animal master, 19 are lectures, 10 are lab master, 7 are assistants, 9 are lab master assistants, the rest are 15; 29 have a doctorial degree,11 are taking the doctorial education; 45 have a master degree. Over 63.2% are professors or associate professors among the full-time teachers, 69.81% of which have master degree of doctorial degree. There are 28 undergraduate Directors, 2 are the Provincial-level Members for “Thousand-Hundred-Ten Talents Project” of Guangdong Province, 9 are scholastical-level Members of “Thousand-Hundred-Ten Talents Project”.

The college attaches consistent importance on undergraduate education, largely developing graduate education, facing to 30 provinces and cities over country for enrollment. Now there are 1,666 undergraduate students and 93 postgraduate students enrolled.

The college largely pushes science research and technology exploring, and actively develops external exchange and cooperation. Nearly three years, it obtained variety of programs totally of more 90, of which 1 is National nature science fund, 1 is national “863” Planned Sub-projects; obtained 1 second prize on provincial level Scientific and Technology  awards,1 third prize on provincial level Scientific and Technology Progress awards,1 first prize on ministerial level Scientific and Technology Progress awards, 3 second prizes and 1 third prize on ministerial level Scientific and Technology Progress awards, 1 first prize on ministerial level Scientific and Technology awards, 1 second prize and third prize on ministerial level Scientific and Technology awards respectively; 1 second prize on ministerial level Nature Scientific first-class academic thesis; 1 first prize ,second prize and third prize on provincial “Challenge Cup” respectively; 3 intramural level on outstanding teaching quality rewards, passing 8 Scientific Achievement Appraisal, applying 6 patents; obtaining 3 patent authorizations; publishing more than 380 academic papers on variety of internal and overseas academic publications, among which 214 core publications, 6 embodied by SCI, 3 embodied by EI ; publishing 5 monographs and 4 teaching materials, 2 intramural level best courses. The college continually speeds up movement of industry, study, and research integration, enhancing the ability to service region and society, striving for region and agriculture economy development offering strong technology support and talented persons support during carrying out the tactic of relying on science and education to rejuvenate the nation. The college successively signed the exchange cooperation agreement with foreign countries such as Viet Nam, Belgium, Australia, and signed technology cooperation agreement with many cities such as Yunfu, Yangjiang, Maoming, Beihai, Dianbai country, and Zhanjiang port.

The college insists the Party education principle and Socialism direction for education, enhancing Party building and Admission work, largely opening spirit civilization construction, actively impelling civilization construction, and promoting the continually improvement of college education ability. In 2004 and 2005 the college was evaluated as “Advanced Unit on Sprit Civilization Construction” continually. In 2004 college labor union was evaluated as intramural, ministerial and provincial level “Advanced Collectivity Of Caring Next Generation”. In 2005 and 2006 college labour union was evaluated as “Advanced Labour Union” by school.
